”Etsi, kutsu minutkin,

että sinun olla saan,

auta tahtomaasi kohti kasvamaan” (Virsi 914)

Tämän virren sanoma on lyhyt ja ytimekäs. Etsi, kutsu minutkin. Tämä koskettaa minua suoraan sydämeen. Joskus, kun tämä työ tuntuu vaikealta ja uupumus iskee, tämä virsi muistuttaa minua miksi tälle tielle uskalsin lähteä. Jumala kutsui.

Niinpä, Jumala kutsuu meitä jokaista työhönsä täällä maan päällä. Miten tänä kesänä osaisimme toimia tämän kutsun mukaisesti? Auttaa lähimmäisiämme? Kuka on lähimmäisemme? Katsoin Suomen kirkon sanastosta määritelmän:

Kristillisen näkemyksen mukaan kaikki ihmiset ovat lähimmäisiä toisilleen. Kaikkiin ihmisiin tulisi suhtautua lähimmäisinä, ja Jeesuksen opetuksen mukaisesti ”rakastaa heitä kuin itseään” (Matt. 22:39).”  

Työsarkaa siis riittää kesälomista huolimatta, ei nälkä eikä kodittomuus tunne kesälomaa. Pyydän teitä jokaista ajattelemaan keinoja auttamaan juuri näitä lähimmäisiämme.

“The Lord now sends us forth with hands to serve and give, to make of all the earth a better place to live…” This hymn has been one of my favourites over the past years. The message is short and simple. This is what we are called to do – this is not meant for angels to do – to go out and proclaim the Good News by doing.  St Francis of Assisi apparently said “preach the Gospel and, if necessary, use words…”

I think this message is good for us all to think about especially during the summer time. We take a duly deserved break from our regular routines and maybe even take a holiday. However, hunger does not take a break, nor does homelessness.

How can we as a congregation be vigilant about what is happening around us?  I do not think there is a simple solution or at least not an easy one. I ask all of you to think about ways to come together and plan a system/method/ministry that would help those in need without summer breaks.

All of us are ministers to God’s Word. Many of us already do awesome things inside and outside of our communities, but let’s plan an event to figure out some of the talents we all are given for God’s ministry.

As the hymn ends: “Help us O Lord, we pray, to do your will today!” let’s all pray that we could truly do what God has called us to do.
