Silent night, holy night,

  All is calm, all is bright,…

    …Christ the Savior is born

I read a story about a little boy who was leaving Christmas Eve candlelight service with his father. He paused at the manger outside the church, he looked at it, tilted his head and said to his dad, “Hey, it’s the same Jesus we had last year. Can’t we get a new Jesus?” The father smiled and knelt next to his son and said, “Son, we get the same Jesus every year. That’s how it works.”

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow, even if in our own mind Jesus might look different. The important thing about Christmas is that God comes to us, unchanged. Christmas is the celebration of Jesus into our midst: into the darkness, bringing the light of peace amid hustle and bustle, into our reality, as a human, as one of us.

Our Saviour comes to each of us, we don’t need to worry about being good enough, or about our failures, or whether our faith is strong enough. Jesus comes regardless of how ready we are, whether all the decorations are up or the presents bought. Jesus comes to us even if forget to invite him. And when God in Jesus comes to us, it fuels in us a fire to go and visit our neighbours, visit family, friends, shut-ins, as well as those who live on the margins.

The Gospel of Luke tells us an angel brings the Good News to all the people. “To you is born this day a Saviour.” God is not some distant royalty or a secret, God comes to us and stays by our side.

On jouluyö, sen hiljaisuutta yksin kuuntelen

     Ja sanaton on sydämeni kieli…

         …taas Jeesus lapsi syntyy uudelleen.”

Luin tarinan pienestä pojasta, joka oli joulukirkossa isänsä kanssa. Hän pysähtyi ulkona seimen luona, katsoi sitä hetken päätään kallistaen ja sanoi isälleen, ”Hei iskä, toihan on sama Jeesus, ku viime vuonna, eiks me voitais hommata uusi Jeesus?” Isä hymyili ja sanoi, ”Jesus ei koskaan muutu.” 

Jeesus- lapsi syntyy uudelleen…  

Jeesus ei muutu, vaikka omat ajatuksemme saattaisivatkin muuttaa käsitystämme hänestä. Tärkeintä joulussa on, että Jumala tulee luoksemme, muuttumattomana. Joulu on Kristuksen tulemisen juhla. Jeesus tuo valon pimeyden keskelle, loistavan rauhan valon kiireen ja melskeen keskelle, meidän todellisuuteemme, ihmiseksi ihmisten joukkoon.

Vapahtaja tulee meidän jokaisen luo; meidän ei tarvitse murehtia, olemmeko tarpeeksi hyviä, tai epäonnistumisiamme, eikä uskomme riittävyyttä. Jeesus tulee riippumatta siitä, kuinka valmiita olemme, onko kaikki koristeet paikallaan ja lahjat hommattu. Jeesus tulee, vaikkemme edes muistaisi pyytää. Ja kun Jumala tulee luoksemme, meissäkin syttyy halu mennä lähimmäistemme luo.

Jouluevankeliumissa enkeli ilmoittaa kaikelle kansalle suuren ilon. "Teille on tänä päivänä syntynyt Vapahtaja." Jumala ei ole joku salainen olento jossain kaukana, vaan hän tulee lähelle, aivan vierellemme.
