Jeesus sanoi talon isännälle: "Kun järjestät päivälliset tai illalliset, älä kutsu ystäviäsi, älä veljiäsi, sukulaisiasi äläkä rikkaita naapureita. Kutsu köyhiä ja raajarikkoja, rampoja ja sokeita." Luukas 14

Minusta tuntuu, että Jeesus todella tarkoittaa sitä! Jeesuksen koko elämä keskittyi näet kutsumaan Jumalan läheisyyteen ne, jotka eivät odota, eivätkä ansaitse sellaista kutsua. Ja Jeesus odottaa meiltä samaa…

Hän odottaa ja olettaa, että lakkaamme laskemasta kuluja, hyötyä, ja palkkiota teoistamme ja että eläisimme runsauden ja siunauksen tunteesta.

Me tahdomme aina laskea ja luetella kaikenlaista, se on niin yleistä, ettemme edes hoksaa sen olemassaoloa, vaikka se rasittaa meitä ihan hirveästi.

Minkähän laista olisi, jos olisimme vapaat olla murehtimatta siitä, mitä muut meistä ajattelevat ja olla ystävällinen ympärillämme olevia kohtaan, varsinkin heitä kohtaan, joita ei useinkaan kohdella ystävällisesti.

Miltähän se näyttäisi, jos omissa piireissämme, oli ne sitten töissä tai vapaaehtoishommissa, seuratoiminnoissa tai kuka missäkin, pitäisimme silmällä kuka näyttäisi jääneen laidalle ja kutsuisimme heidät mukaan?

On tosi monia ihmisiä, jotka tarvitsevat tukea ja resursseja. He saattavat olla ihmisiä, joita näemme päivittäin, ja joita emme ehkä todella näe, siis heidän vaikeuksiaan ja tarpeitaan.

Jeesus kutsuu meitä elämään vapaana turhista rajoitteista sekä rasittavista huolista siitä mitä toiset ajattelevat,

kokemaan Jumalan apulaisena olemisen ilo jakamalla niitä runsaita omanarvontunteen, arvokkaana pitämisen lahjoja, joita meille on siunaantunut.

Pyhä Henki tarjoaa meille Jumalan valtakunnan runsauden ja siunauksen jaettavaksi joka ikisen ihmisen kesken.

Jesus said also to the one who had invited him, “When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. Luke 14

I think Jesus really means it! Jesus’ whole life is centered on inviting into the presence of God those who neither expect nor deserve such an invitation. And he expects us to do the same.

He expects us to stop counting the costs, benefits, and rewards of our actions and live from a sense of abundance and blessing.

We tend to count everything. It’s so ever-present in our lives that we almost forget it exists, even as it takes a tremendous toll on us.

I wonder what it would be like to live into the freedom to stop counting and stop worrying about what others think and simply be kind to everyone around us, particularly those who are not often treated with kindness.

What would it look like at work, at school, and at the places we volunteer or  in our congregation, to look out for those who seem off to the margin and to invite them into the center by inviting them into our lives?

So many people in our community are in need of resources and support. They could be people we see every day, and then again, we may not really see these people, know who they are and their struggles and their needs.

Jesus invites each of us to a life freed from the unnecessary worries of what everyone else thinks,

an invitation to experience the joy of playing “God’s helper” in handing out the abundant gifts of dignity and worth and value with which we have been blessed.

The Holy Spirit offers to us God’s realm of abundance and blessing to be shared by all.
