Summer Blessings to All!

Yes, summer does seem to be here, at least most of the time…. We are entering the time of summer holidays, being that some of us go away from home and maybe some coming or going home or at least to their roots.

We may see visitors in our midst, some familiar faces, some perhaps total strangers popping in for a worship service or two. How do we welcome these visitors? What can we do to make them feel at home?

Do we want people to be with us, if they are different? What happens when someone does something different from what we are doing? We all experience our connection to God in a different way. And I’m pretty certain God is very okay with that.

Is there a right way to pray or sing or sit or stand during the service?

Worship services have evolved over the past 2000 years in many ways. Who can say, what is the perfect and only correct way to serve God in a worship service? I sure can’t.

I think each of us has our own traditions, and that is good. We need some structure, liturgy, to follow. But our personal experience in a service depends on so many reasons. We tend to keep our personal feelings deep inside. I don’t know, if someone had no sleep at all due to a difficult situation, be it a looming illness, or worry about a surgery, worry about driver’s licences renewal or something else. Another person might be very happy due to some joyous event that happened or something exciting is going to be happening soon.  

It is important to be mindful of each other and remember that we all have the right to feel the way we feel.  

Let’s all invite our sisters and brothers in Christ to worship with us as who they are and embrace our differences.

Siunattua kesää!

Niinpä, kesähän tässä tuntuu olevan melko lailla täällä. Kesälomat kohta käsillä ja monet meistä lähtevät reissuun ja ehkäpä toisia taas tulee kotikonnuille tänne Toronton maisemiin.

Ehkä näemme vierailijoita keskuudessamme, joitain tuttuja kasvoja, toisia taas ventovieraita piipahtavan jumalanpalveluksiimme. Mitenkä voisimme toivottaa heidät tervetulleiksi? Kuinka voisimme tehdä heidän olonsa kotoisaksi?

Haluammeko keskuuteemme ihmisiä, jotka ovat erilaisia? Mitä tapahtuu, kun joku tekee jotain täysin eri lailla kuin mihin olemme tottuneet? Kaikkihan me koemme yhteytemme Jumalaan eri tavoin. Ja olen melko varma siitä, että Jumala on tästä kaikesta ihan ok.

Onko jokin oikea tapa rukoilla tai veisata tai istua tai seisoa jumalanpalveluksen aikana?

Jumalanpalvelukset ovat kehittyneet ja muokkautuneet viimeisen kahdentuhannen vuoden aikana monella tavalla ja tulevat edelleenkin kehittymään. Kuka voisi sanoa mikä on se ainoa oikea tapa palvella Jumalaa jumalanpalveluksessa? En minä ainakaan.

Jokaisella on omat traditionsa ja sehän on hyvä. Tarvitsemme jonkin näköistä rakennetta, liturgiaa, jota seuraamme. Oma henkilökohtainen kokemuksemme jumalanpalveluksissa riippuu niin monesta asiasta. Meillä on tapana pitää omat tunteemme syvällä sisällämme. Minä en tiedä, jos joku ei nukkunut silmänräpäystäkään edellisenä yönä, johtuen jostain vaikeasta tilanteesta. Unettoman yön on voinut aiheuttaa vaikka häämöttävä sairaus, tuleva leikkaus tai ajokortti. Toinen voi vastaavasti olla tosi iloinen jostain hyvästä ja iloisesta tapahtuneesta tai jostain jännittävästä ja hauskasta asiasta, joka tulee tapahtumaan.

On tärkeää ottaa huomioon toinen toisemme ja muistaa, että jokaisella on oikeus tuntea, niin kuin haluaa.

Kutsukaamme siis sisaremme ja veljemme Kristuksessa palvelemaan Jumalaa omina itsenään ja arvostetaan erilaisuuksiamme.
